The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of fresh mulberry forage (Morus alba L.) and fresh corn husk (Zea mays L.) in the feeding of improved guinea pigs, comparing a non-conventional diet with a conventional one, both supplemented with a concentrated feed, and to record their response on weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion. Sixty-four improved male guinea pigs, 15 days old, with an average weight of 215 g were used. The animals were randomly distributed in four treatments: T1 (only corn husk), T2 (only mulberry forage), T3 (corn husk + concentrate) and T4 (mulberry forage + concentrate). After 7 days of adaptation to the feed, management and facilities, weekly live weight and feed consumption were recorded every 24 hours. A completely randomized design and analysis of variance were used for weight gain, dry matter consumption and feed conversion. Duncan's test was used to compare means with a significance level of p < 0.05. Forage supplementation with concentrate (T3 and T4) significantly improved (p < 0.05) weight gain, consumption and feed conversion of guinea pigs compared to treatments with only forage (T1 and T2). No significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed between treatments with only forage, as well as between treatments with concentrate supplementation (T3 and T4). However, it is inferred that fresh mulberry can replace fresh corn husk in the diet of growing guinea pigs, especially in places where corn husk cultivation is very limited or high cost.
