Trade dynamics, performance and positioning of the Peruvian dairy agroindustrial system

The aim of this study was to assess the current market dynamics, performance and positioning of the Peruvian dairy agroindustrial system (AGS). The methodology DSMAS was used in three stages: a) market dynamics, b) discrete analysis of the AGS and c) evaluation of the current position. Information was obtained from semi-structured interviews, specialised databases, and scientific papers. The AGS has a moderate demand-driven dynamic. Evaporated milk is the dairy product with the highest production and consumption. The legal framework has been regulating the performance of the agents in the chain. At the structural level, there is a high presence of small producers with little specialisation, while large producers have the greatest capacity to produce quality milk. The different rearing systems determine the technological level of the producer. Large industries are efficient in the production and marketing of dairy products. The strengths are the presence of specialised agents in dairy production, while there are opportunities for development at the commercial level. However, weaknesses arise from the low performance of smaller-scale agents, in a context of threats due to economic problems. AGS has several gaps that limit its performance in the global dairy chain.
