ABSTRACT

This research was conducted in order to evaluate the protective action of the hydroalcoholic extract of Rhizophora mangle "mangle" on hepatic lipid peroxidation in Rattus rattus var. albinus. For two controls were considered experience or witnesses one exposed with carbon tetrachloride and the other with saline, compared to two treatments with four repetitions to which were added the hydroalcoholic extract of R. mangle at concentrations of 200 and 400 mg / kg body weight for three days to determine the concentrations of malondialdehyde (which is stoichiometrically equal to the free radicals formed), by the technique of the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. It was found that the groups treated with hydroalcoholic extract showed reduced free radical formation, and leads us to conclude that the extract exerts protective effect on hepatic lipid peroxidation in Rattus rattus var. albinus.

Key words: Lipid peroxidation, free radical, hydroalcoholic extract.
